Mushrooms are often called as queen of vegetables and table delicious since time immemorial. Mushrooms have been consumed in many countries for centuries, not only for nutritive value but also for medicinal or functional purposes. It is also a good tonic for treating various diseases. Mushrooms are rich in carbohydrates, proteins, a good source of vitamins and minerals. The Greeks believed that mushrooms provided strength for warrior in battle. The Chinese treated mushrooms as a health food, the “elixir of life”.
In Bangladesh, every year about 12.39 million dollars equivalent to mushrooms including Button and Shiitake mushrooms are consumed and imported from foreign countries like China, Thailand, Korea, and Australia. These mushrooms are mainly consumed in five star hotels, Chinese restaurants and aristocratic houses etc. There is a huge market demand of mushrooms (especially Button or Agaricus mushroom) in Chinese restaurants and five star hotels and most of mushrooms (fruiting bodies) are imported from foreign countries.
Bio-Tech Mushroom (BTM) is a computerized high-tech digital agro-based mushroom industry in Bangladesh. As a food manufacturer, it has been producing commercial cultivation of White Button (Agaricus bisporus) Mushroom (WBM) or Brown Button (Agaricus subrufesense) Mushroom (BBM) in Bangladesh since July 2018. Throughout the entire production and supply chain starting from the import of spawn and compost from world renowned sources to growing, picking, packaging and delivering to consumers’ door-steps, strict quality assurance and quality control policies are adhered to through good agricultural practices (GAP) in addition to compliance to HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points), ISO 22000:2018 and BRC (British Retail Consortium).
